• During the Revolutionary War, David Bushnell of Connecticut deeveloped the first submarine vessel intended to be used in war, to sink a warship. The submarine, which was named "Turtle" worked; however, it failed in its attempt to sink its target.
Nevertheless, while not intended to be part of our own "AM250 Project" efforts, the story of the Turtle should not be overlooked. In TO that end, in 2003 a group of students at Old Saybrook [Connecticut] High School were given the opportunity to build an updated interpretation of the Turtle. Under the direction of Roy Manstan and Fred Frese, these 21st century students designed and built all of the elements that enabled David Bushnell to create his 18th century wooden submarine. In November 2007, this modern interpretation was launched into the Connecticut River within sight of where Bushnell first tested the original Turtle in 1775.
